Een nachtje korter op Munroe Island verbleven, omdat ik alle hoogtepunten wel gezien had en het misschien wel wat relaxter is om een extra dag aan het strand te pakken.

Om 11:00 uur kwam mijn taxi. Ik vroeg hem om bij de ATM te stoppen, waar ik eerder gepind had, maar hij wist een andere. Waarom luisteren mensen zo slecht? Dit resulteerde namelijk dat we daarna bij vijf andere ATM's een poging deden en bij letterlijk de zesde lukte het. Ook wist hij zogenaamd een snellere route en je raadt het al, door duurde juist langer.

Maar goed,  uiteindelijk kwamen we bij Havana Beach Villa aan, waar ik dus drie in plaats van twee nachten zal blijven. Nu moet je niet aan een villa denken zoals wij die kennen, maar een leuke kleine bungalow direct op het strand, heerlijk.

Het is wel iets verder van het drukke strand, maar daardoor ook geen geluidsoverlast van het drukke verkeer bij het hoofd-strand. In de avond ziet er hier super gezellig uit met de sfeerverlichting en het eten wordt bezorgd door een aflever-restaurant hier uit de buurt. Helemaal relaxt dus.

De zee is lekker warm, maar niet zo helder als andere landen in Azië. Je zit hier aan de Arabische zee, aan de westkust van India. Maar ondanks dat is het prima vertoeven in de zee en op het stille strand.

Op zondag gelopen naar het hoofd-strand. Hier ook geen bedjes en parasols zoals wij dat kennen. Iedereen zit of staat hier te kletsen en de lifeguards hebben het druk iedereen uit de zee te houden, want weinig mensen hier kunnen zwemmen.

Als de schemer inzet wordt het bewolkt, jammer, want hier kan je bij zonsondergang prachtige foto's maken.  Maar het is mij toch redelijk gelukt.

Als het donker is vormen er groepjes mensen om de kleine kraampjes heen. De ene verkoopt ijs, de andere gepofte aardappels, snack, en zelfs eentje die moslims verteld over het heilige schrift. Een mini dienst dus. Ik kijk alleen naar de lekkernijen, maar besluit de adviezen te volgen en niets van eetkraampjes te eten. Wel neem ik een koude limoensap, die hier erg lekker zijn.

Daarna een leuk restaurantje gevonden waar meer toeristen komen. Hoofdzakelijk dertigers die met hamambroeken, tattoos en dreadlocks, praten over hoe de wereld te redden van de ondergang. Ieder heeft zichzelf helemaal herontdekt door de yoga en wierrook en nu hebben ze de wijsheid in pacht. Heerlijk bijelkaar onder het genot van een vegetarische maaltijd en chai tea. Ik kijk en geniet ervan.

Verder veel op het strand gezeten, dan hier, dan daar. Wel elke keer willen mensen met mij op de foto. Sommigen vragen. Anderen gaan gewoon achter mij staan en laten een vriend of vriendin dan snel een foto maken. Soms is dat best hinderlijk.

Het blijft bewolkt, dus echt zonnen is het niet. Maar het is wel behoorlijk warm, dus rustig aan doen is het beste.

Wel af en toe een stuk gelopen, zoals naar het spoor om te kijken naar de overvolle treinen. Je moet er maar zin in hebben om zo opeen gestapeld te moeten reizen. Mij niet gezien. Op sommige trajecten heb je overigens wel eerste klas tickets, voor een mini coupé voor vier tot acht personen.

Ook nog even wezen shoppen, op zoek naar essentiële oliën en sandalwood wierook. Achterop de scooter, door wijken waar geen toerist zal komen. Wel leuk om te zien. Maar zodra je stopt komen de foto verzoekjes weer op je af. Uiteindelijk is het allemaal gelukt.

Nu weer terug bij mijn 'villa' waar mijn nieuwste katten vriendin al op mijn zat te wachten. We ontmoette elkaar de eerste dag en nu blijft ze zelfs als er geen eten te halen valt.

Morgen vertrek ik naar mijn laatste bestemming: Kumarakom.

I stayed a shorter night on Munroe Island, because I had seen all the highlights and it might be a bit more relaxing to spend an extra day at the beach. My taxi arrived at 11:00 am.

I asked him to stop at the ATM where I had withdrawn earlier, but he knew another one. Why do people listen so poorly? This resulted in us subsequently attempting five other ATMs and being successful at literally the sixth one. He also supposedly knew a faster route and you guessed it right, it actually took longer.

Anyway, we finally arrived at Havana Beach Villa, where I will stay for three nights instead of two. Now you should not think of a villa as we know it, but a nice little bungalow directly on the beach, it is really wonderful.

It is a little further from the main beach, but therefore no noise pollution from the busy traffic at the main beach. In the evening it looks super cozy with the mood-lighting and the food is delivered by a local delivery restaurant. So it's relaxed here.

The sea is nice and warm, but not as clear as other countries in Asia. Here you are on the Arabian Sea, on the worst coast of India. But despite that, it is great to spend time in the sea and on the quiet beach.

Walked to the main beach on Sunday. There are no beds and parasols here as we know them. Everyone is just sitting or standing here chatting and in the meantime the lifeguards are busy keeping everyone out of the sea, because few people here can swim.

When dusk sets in it becomes cloudy, which is a shame, because normally you can take beautiful photos here at sunset. But I succeeded quite well anyway.

When it is dark, groups of people form around the small stalls. One sells ice cream, the other baked potatoes, snacks, and even one that tells Muslims about the holy scripture. So a bit like a mini service. I only looked at the delicacies, but decide to follow the advice and not eat anything from food stalls. I do take a cold lime juice, which is very tasty here.

Then found a nice restaurant where more tourists come. Mainly thirty-somethings with hammam pants, tattoos and dreadlocks, talking about how to save the world from destruction. Everyone has completely rediscovered themselves through yoga and incense and now they have a monopoly on wisdom. Being real cosy together while enjoying a vegetarian meal and chai tea. I watch and enjoy it.

Of course I did spent a lot of time on the beach, then here, then there. It remains cloudy, so there is no real sunbathing. But it is quite warm, so it is best to take it easy and chillex. Every time people want to take a picture with me. Some ask, others just stand behind me and let a friend take a quick photo. Sometimes this can become quite annoying

I did walk a bit every now and then, such as to the track to look at the crowded trains. You just have to be excited about having to travel stacked like that, I guess. Not for me that is.... On some routes you do have first class tickets, for a mini compartment for four people.

Later I went shopping for essential oils and sandalwood incense. On the back of the scooter, through neighborhoods where no tourists will come. Nice to see. But as soon as you stop, the photo requests come at you again. In the end it all worked out and got all the stuff I wanted.

Now back at the villa with my new cat friend. We met the very first day and are getting along quite well. She now even stays when there is no food!

Tomorrow I leave for my last destination: Kumarakom.
